Bioknowledge/ FR3cE ASRI Postgraduate Research Conference Program pdf

A SMORGASBOARD OF RESEARCH FOR A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE.

A range of the latest postgraduate research being undertaken at Flinders University into the sustainability and biodiversity of South Australia’s unique ecosystems, and environmental and human health issues, will be featured at the 2007 Post-graduate Research Conference from 17 – 18th July.

Held jointly each year by the Flinders Research Centre for Coastal and Catchment Environments and the Flinders Bioknowledge Research Group, discussions at the conference will cover a wide range of research topics currently under investigation, many of which will potentially lead to economic and social benefits from improved environmental knowledge.

The Conference provides an opportunity to bring together postgraduate researchers from diverse discipline areas and research groups to showcase their work, to practice their presentation skills, and to stimulate opportunities for collaboration and furthering common research interests. It demonstrates the recognition and support that PhD students can expect to be given for the contribution they make to science research at Flinders.

Invited keynote speakers are Professor Chris West, Chief Executive Officer of ZoosSA, and Dr Sue Murray-Jones, Marine Biologist with the Coastal Protection Branch, DEH SA.

Both speakers work in industries that rely on new and existing scientific research in conservation and environment protection policy, practice and education, and which are significant employers of science graduates and post graduates.

Their career paths across the world and within Australia will provide insights into career imperatives and potential pathways for the next generation of the science-based workforce.

Post Graduate students will present their research including:

  • the role of ants in protecting seed from lethal temperatures during fire
  • viruses in our oceans
  • drinking water and public health
  • mercury in tuna: are farmed tuna the safer option?
  • genetic selection in birds in the Galapagos, and nest predation in an SA bird species
  • social structures in Pygmy bluetongue lizards;
  • remediation of hydrocarbon contaminated sites using commercial crop species
  • potentially positive influences of marine mammals on fisheries
  • impact of dam bypass devices in reducing negative effects on macroinvertebrates
  • exploration of the suceptibility of oysters to heat stress during spawning
  • antioxidants in blue fin tuna
  • innovative communication in science classrooms
  • ecological aquaculture of marine molluscs
  • decision making about prescribed burning in temperate peri-urban Australia
  • population dynamics of marine sea stars
  • floral traits, pollination and breeding systems in salt tolerant shrubs
  • green algae as a potential source of renewable energy
  • identifying compounds to reach and disinfect Legionella bacteria
  • how to store and recover excess freshwater in aquifers and avoid excess salinity
  • reproductive toxicology of CYN in drinking water

Conference dates: 8.30am – 5.30pm on Tuesday – Wednesday 17th – 18th July 2007
Venue: Lecture Theatre 1 Flinders Medical School Flinders University

Flinders Research Centre for Coastal & Catchment Environments offers research expertise which encompasses the whole water cycle.
Flinders Bioknolwedge Research Group focuses its research on Australia’s biodiversity and landscapes.

New Natural History Films Starring Temperate Reefs

Flinders University and SARDI Aquatic Sciences and have collaborated to produce a 2-DVD set of short films documenting our temperate reefs and how we can all take actions to help prevent their degradation.

The documentaries have been written, filmed and produced by students in the Masters of Natural History Film-making course at Flinders University.

This is almost the first time that anyone has documented the southern seas temperate reefs on film and made it available for general distribution. These are ideal teaching aids.

The 2-DVD set costs only $5 and is available from Reef Watch:
